(Episcopal Fellowship of Lesbians and Gays and Straights) is quite blessed to have a supportive congregation as well as a truly caring and involved clergy. Members of EFLAGS are involved in many aspects of church life and are quite giving of their time, energy and talents. If you happen to attend a service keep an eye out for a name tag which displays the Gay Pride Flag Colors and feel free to introduce yourself. The ministry offers support, fellowship, and great pot luck lunches. If you're looking for a mainstream church welcoming all people in their journey of faith, you may have found a home. On the second Sunday of each month people sitting in church for the announcements are told an EFLAGS (Episcopal Fellowship of Lesbians and Gays and Straights) meeting is to be held at 12:30, but what actually goes on at an EFLAGS meeting? The first thing people would notice is a lot of socializing, and people scurrying about in the kitchen trying to finish last minute potluck creations. One would see a long serving table gradually being filled with food items with people awaiting the call to a prayer of Thanksgiving. Once the blessing has been prayed, everyone piles up their plate with food.
The ministry of sharing food with those who happen to walk into Sacquety Hall has become a hallmark of EFLAGS. On any given Sunday when EFLAGS is holding its potluck, anyone who walks in is greeted and invited to join the food line. For this ministry, hospitality remains sacred. Part of the ministry's energy is working in outreach and public awareness within the community at large, sharing the good news that there is a family of faith available, where all are cherished and given the opportunity to grow in faith and participation. This, however, can only be achieved if active members are involved within all aspects of our faith community.
St. Wilfrids is quite unique among other churches in our diocese. Where other Gay and Lesbian ministries keep a closed door policy, or try to keep a hidden profile, our ministry wishes to do as much as possible to demonstrate the joy of community offering the collective talents within the group as a positive extension of faith.
So, if you happen to walk into an EFLAGS meeting, and suddenly find yourself standing in line at the food table, and sit and eat, you will quickly find out that you are not really at a ministry meeting, you are simply sharing a meal with church friends who are living, working, and sharing a journey of faith together.
